Keeping Your Greenhouse Clean

Though proper temperatures, water, and ventilation are all important in a greenhouse, you should always remember to keep it clean. Plants respond well to a clean environment, and if your greenhouse can provide them with this environment, they will be much happier plants. The first thing to remember is not to smoke in your greenhouse or don't let those that do smoke come inside. The smoke can affect the plants and their health, not to mention that it’s a potential fire hazard.

Don't keep trash in your greenhouse; you'll be surprised how many people do! Trash attracts insects and bugs which can affect your plants. After every day that you use your greenhouse, sweep the floor, and make sure you remove any dead or fallen leaves from the house and move these to your compost pit.

Remember to clean your greenhouse walls. You don't have to clean these every day, but a general cleaning every couple of months is a good idea. You will be able to insulate heat much better with clean walls, and your plants will be able to get a bit more sunlight. Plus dirty greenhouse walls are one of the causes of illness or disease in the greenhouse gardener! So protect your own health and make sure those walls are squeaky!

Owning a greenhouse usually means a serious commitment to gardening. If you are just starting your herb garden, you might want to hold off getting a greenhouse till you've mastered some of the herb gardening techniques discussed in this site. Keep greenhouse gardening in mind, though, as you might want to have your own greenhouse one day, even if it's a small one. It can also double as your work area or tool shed in the garden. Greenhouses can be very useful for your herb garden, and for any other gardening you might want to try doing. They allow you to keep plants throughout the winter, as well as grow plants that are used to warmer climates, like tropical herbs.
