Herbs to Plant

When beginning an herb garden, choosing which herbs to plant can take a lot of time, especially when you're unsure about what you want to make of or from your garden. Even non-beginners, like gardeners who are replanting face the challenge of choice because planting the same herbs again and again can become boring. In order to “spice up” your herb garden or be sure that you are growing herbs that you will use and enjoy, take one day or a couple of days away from the garden in order to make your decisions.

First, try to decide what kind of herbs you will often use in your cooking or around the home. Think back to your herb filled dishes, and figure our which herbs you most often use. This is useful for you because it gives you a list of herbs to plant, as well as saves you money from continuously buying these herbs at the grocery store again and again. Having this list of herbs can move you on to the next step.

Figure out where in your garden or your home you will be planting your herbs, as well as where you live in terms of climate and seasons. Check the herbs to plant on your list. You may find that some of them may not thrive where you are, or where you intend to plant them. While you're doing this, you should always look into whether or not the plants on your list are compatible with each other. Some herbs tend to be toxic to other herbs, and so knowing that your plants will be neighborly towards each other can be a key secret to your garden's success.

Remember that just because some herbs to plant may have been knocked off your list, doesn't mean you can't replace these with other herbs. There are plenty of other herbs you may not have thought of planting or growing that could be useful to you. So if you've made space to grow ten kinds of herbs, and four are not compatible with your climate or with your other plants, you can always replace those four with some other options. Don't settle for your six!

Finally, for beginners, here are some suggestions for herbs to plant. These herbs are generally easy to grow, and are often used in many dishes. Basil, all kinds can be very useful and full of fragrance! Parsley and oregano complement each other very well in many dishes. Dill adds a nice touch to soups and salads. Rosemary and mint are also easy to grow and can be used in meat dishes. Now that's a list of six herbs to plant, the rest is up to you!
